A brand new Kia Optima has finally been unveiled. Kia took the car to North America for this spring’s New York Motor Show. The news may have been announced on April 1, but the evolution of the Optima is very real and the new model is expected in showrooms next year.
We first saw what is now the Optima at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, where it was showcased as the Sportspace concept. The prototype previews both the saloon and estate car versions of the next-generation showroom model.
The ‘tiger nose’ front grille, which has become a Kia trademark, is subtly altered for the new Optima. It’s joined by a new shape for the headlights and front bumper. As only the front end of the car has been officially previewed, the rest of the design remains a mystery. It feels sharp and imposing, and the sweeping roof line should extend to a new rear spoiler.
Kia intends to upgrade the interior quality and rework the arrangement to give more personal space. The Optima’s wheelbase may be slightly longer to make this possible. Leather upholstery is now anticipated to be standard, along with a prominent widescreen display at the centre console.
Engine options for the car should include efficient diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid and a full hybrid system. Power levels and other figures have yet to be confirmed. A petrol model will be made for markets other than the UK. We still get plenty of choice, and the economy levels from the Optima should be very attractive.
Kia plans the release of the Optima sometime in 2016. An estate version will follow a few months after the saloon.
